Why We VCS...

"When I was 13, my grandma was diagnosed with colon cancer, and after surgery and chemotherapy, she went into remission.  In the spring of 2003, we learned that the cancer had returned and spread.  After failed rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, she entered hospice and passed away that fall.  It is because of my grandma that I became involved in my high school's All-Youth Relay For Life and I continue to serve through VCS in her memory."

-- Amanda, Class of 2008

"During my sophomore year at Vanderbilt, my boyfriend was diagnosed with Acute Mylogenous Leukemia. It was an event that made me realize that cancer really can happen to anyone, regardless of your age or your lifestyle or your plans and aspirations. The months of treatment following that diagnosis also awakened me to the fact that you don't have to be working in a research laboratory or hospital to help save those afflicted with this devastating disease. Patient advocacy can be as simple as running a relay or donating blood. That's part of the VCS mission: to make students aware that cancer can happen to anyone, and that anyone can make a substantial difference in the fight against cancer."

"I VCS because I get to hear Amanda's awesome stories."
